Slesvigske vognsamling
The museum is located at the site of the former Schaumann's Cloth Mill from the 1930s.
The exhibition comprises approximately half of the 200 carriages that one single man – bookseller Johannes Chr. Nielsen – collected in the mid twentieth century.
The history of the carriage is presented through text plates and selected carriage examples.
The museum covers the history of carriages from the invention of the wheel until motorised vehicles succeeded horses as the preferred tractive force.
The carriages are exhibited in the environments in which they were used – in the city, in the country, in daily life, times of celebration, for hunting, by the wealthy, for professionals, in accidents and fires, and for 'the final journey'.
One section illustrates carriage construction.
At the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century the coachbuilders of Haderslev were known for their high quality carriages.
In addition, visitors will find a small exhibition about Schaumann's Cloth Mill as a part of the Industrial Museum of Slesvig.
In addition to the exhibitions is a workshop in which the carriages are continuously restored.
